The Office for Catechetical Formation is part of the Office for Faith Formation with Youth and Young Adults. The Director of Parish Religious Elementary Education reports directly to the Vicar, Faith Formation with Youth and Young Adults. He/she assists the Vicar in fostering the catechetical mission of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, in particular, the religious education of children in Archdiocesan Parish Religious Education Programs (PREP) and Catholic Elementary Schools. The Director assists the Vicar in fostering the Catholic identity of PREP and Catholic Elementary Schools as well as overseeing the elementary religion curriculum and sacramental preparation programs for the children of these Archdiocesan entities.

Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • overseeing the Office for Catechetical Formation staff and budget
  • working collaboratively with the other Archdiocesan offices, institutions and organizations
  • serving as a resource to Pastors, Directors of Religious Education and Catholic Elementary School Principals
  • overseeing the Archdiocesan Board of Parish Directors/Coordinators/Administrators of Religious Education (PD/C/ARE), particularly professional development and spiritual opportunities and local county (monthly) meetings
  • serving as a member of the Archdiocesan Parish Religious Education Council
  • providing new D/C/AREs Orientation days and mentorship
  • overseeing the catechetical certification of Catholic School faculties and PREP catechists
  • insuring access and inclusion of children with disabilities in PREP
  • safeguarding Archdiocesan safe environment requirements and teaching of the personal safety lessons in PREP
  • participating in the PA Conference of Catechetical Leadership organization and attends meetings.

The ideal candidate is a practicing and model Catholic who holds a graduate in Theology or Religious Studies from a Catholic university or college: is knowledgeable of contemporary catechetical documents and issues: has 5 years administration experience and preferably on a Diocesan level; is a proven leader with organizational, managerial, problem solving and technological skills; takes direction well and works collaboratively with others
