Immigration Lawyer

Major Responsibilities:   To assist individuals and families, who would not otherwise be able to afford such services, with immigration and naturalization problems and with problems related to their legal status in the United States, including representation before the USCIS, Executive Office for Immigration Review, Board of Immigration Appeals, Federal and Appeals Court. This position encompasses direct service responsibilities.

Supervision Received:    Provided by Administrator for Immigration Legal Services. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interviews clients to determine whether their problems are related to immigration.
  • Provides assistance with family-based immigration visas, naturalization, waivers, asylum and other petitions.
  • Provides relief from removal through such means as asylum, withholding of removal, cancellation of removal, adjustment of status, waivers, voluntary departure or alternative options.
  • Represents clients before the USCIS, Executive Office for Immigration Review, Board of Immigration Appeals, Federal and Appeals Court.
  • Assists clients in identification of documents required (dependent upon immigration action required) and helps clients plan to obtain them.
  • Refers clients to other Immigration services providers, attorneys or voluntary agencies, when warranted due to the inability of CSS' Immigration Services to provide appropriate assistance.
  • Identifies clients' non-immigration needs and makes appropriate referrals within CSS or other appropriate social service agencies.
  • Provides information to, and accepts referrals from, other CSS services as appropriate.
  • Provides information to public as part of educational programs in parishes and other community locations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Representative Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and orientation to the philosophy of the Agency as presented in Mission/Philosophy statements.
  • Knowledge of Immigration law and INS procedures which may affect clients and their decisions about alternatives to pursue.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a positive and professional relationship with co-workers, clients, and visitors; cultural sensitivity and ability to relate well and effectively in a diverse workplace and with a diverse client population.
  • Ability to organize, efficiently document, and routinely update information.
  • Ability to utilize legal reference materials relevant to the clients' immigration and naturalization needs.
  • Ability to prepare written motions, pleadings, briefs and/other submissions to the Executive Office for Immigration Review, Board of Immigration Appeals and Federal Courts.
  • Must possess a law degree, be admitted to practice in any state with a minimum of 2 years' experience in Immigration law.
  • Fluency is Spanish is required. Additional language fluency is a positive.
